Sea of Common Catastrophe
Sea of Common Catastrophe is a multidisciplinary performance about rapid change in Urban neighborhoods. The show is created in collaboration with Ashe, JEMEGWA Jean Marie and Gwelene in Charleston and 7 Stages in Atlanta The show will be developed through a series of exchanges with our partners that will take the form of visual arts workshops, dialogues and community sings. Sea will premier in New Orleans in Jan 2017 then tour to Atlanta and Charleston.
“Sea” features a shifting multi-level set that in combination with projected image and live music will become an underwater-bistro-dance-hall-community-center, a magical sunken world and meeting ground where performers become representatives of a new hybrid community. The audience will watch them as they work and sing in this floating world, affected by and affecting their continually changing environment. Cardboard boxes remade into household items and childhood memories drift through the space on undersea currents. A fantastical music machine turns like a carousel, mixing familiar music with broken text. Video projectors mounted on the carousel will throw images throughout the space—a heart projected on a performer’s chest becomes a fish, clothing swims into boxes and packed away enveloping the audience in shifting waves of image and song.
